I am making this post because Fontaine Archon Quest made me go down the theory rabbit hole and I need other people to agree with me that I'm not crazy.

Of course this post will have SPOLERS about the Archon Quest and some minor one about world quests, but I'll try to stay vague about them so everyone can still read this.

First thing off, fontaine is super related to Abyss stuff:

So far we have:

Childe actually finally dropping the things from his character story, giving us some weird Abyss fact that doesn't seem to be important yet (but i bet will become later on);

the whole Primordial Sea thing. I don't know if you saw that, but during the Archon Quest (in Marcel's underwater hideout) if you use elemental sight on the water it's black, just straight up black. 

NOTHING has ever been black before, so that to me just screams ABYSS. 

Also, it was flowing upwards, as in, in reverse, which reminds me of the reverse statue, the reverse city in the chasm, and all of that stuff. Then it would also make sense for it to "reverse" the life it created, dissolving people. 

the world quests in Fontaine being very Abyss related, as well as the constant mention all over fontaine of the name Jakob Ingold, the one who allegedly first discovered the effects the water from Primordial Sea had on people (this is said during the Archon Quest).

So far, in every Archon Quest we've had the Fatui as main villains (except in Mondstadt, but then Signora kinda stole the spotlight, so we all forgot about the Abyss Mages), and the Abyss Order stuff has progressed independently with Dain, but I think they're trying to reintroduce the topic in the main quest this time.

One of my main theories is that the Tsaritsa is at least somewhat right in whatever her objective is (even if her Harbingers are deranged psychopaths), so when we'll eventually get to Snezhnaya it's gonna be some huge mess, but we're gonna get the key to piece together some facts that they've throwing at us since the beginning with no context, and find some common ground (Are she or Pierro still gonna be bosses we'll have to fight? Maybe. Will the common ground be fighting Celestia or maybe saving it from the Abyss that is, maybe, taking over? Also Maybe. I have some speculations, but no proof whatsoever. Just vibes)

The reason I think that the Tsaritsa is not our enemy and doesn't want the Gnosis to, I don't know, take over the world or some shit, is because then why are all the Archons so chill about giving their Gnosis away?

Many say that, well, Signora attacked Venti in Mondstadt, that means Venti didn't want to give his Gnosis to the Fatui, otherwise why would she have done that? 

And maybe that's even true, but 

why isn't Venti more worried about it, then? 

after knowing Signora's backstory, she probably did it because of a personal grudge, ngl

Also, with every other archon it went very peacefully, especially with Zhongli. Zhongli who literally gave it away like it was nothing: if he truly cared about it he would have found another way to get his retirement, the Fatui weren't the only ones he could ask for help, but since he was already giving it away he probably thought he should get something out of it.

Ei too (and while she isn't technically one of the original Seven she has always been there as Makoto's twin, so she's still old enough to remember the Archon War), she literally didn't even have it on her and wasn't worried at all when Miko just straight up gave it away.

Even Nahida gave two of them away, the only thing that was holding her back was not the fact that she needed them, or what the Tsaritsa wanted with them, just the fact that one had just been used by Dottore to create a god to replace her, so she didn't exactly want to give him two of them.

So far all the gods we've met are: either old enough to know some stuff or the literal god of wisdom, who still knows some stuff thanks to Irminsul.

None of them seem too worried about the Tsaritsa's plan. (even mf Zhongli that literally signed and NDA is just chilling) (like, i know you know what the Tsaritsa is doing, and you're a really good guy who literally wants nothing more than his people to be safe, so if you're not stopping her i can't really think of her as a bad guy)

I made this long ass premise to say that when Lyney says that Arlecchino yes, wants the Gnosis, but also wants to save Fontaine, I-

I think that could actually be true.

Or at least I don't think they're the ones behind all of the stuff that is going in in there (realistically speaking, we don't know if Arlecchino actually cares about Fontaine. I don't think she has plans about its downfall, but maybe she just doesn't give a fuck, whether they all drown or not), I think it either directly the Abyss Order, or just a consequences of abyssal energy on the land and water.

(also there's like, three Fatui tents in the entire map and from where they're placed it could actually be them just investigating what the fuck it's going on with the Abyss. I have 100% exploration, so i know i haven't missed any,,)

The Abyss being responsible might explain a bunch of stuff, like Childe being judged by the Oratrice guilty even when he's not.

Let's put some stuff together: Childe says that, while in the Abyss, he awakened "something", and that he still carries traces of that "something" inside of him.

The Oratrice is a divine mechanism, as such it is powered by divine energy.

In Fontaine we are introduced to Pneuma and Ousia. 

Each of them is what could be called and "Archè", which (if memories of greek philosophy in high school don't betray me) means something like "original substance", something from which everything else originates (like Heraclitus thought it was fire, Thales thought it was water. I should go back to read it, i might find something there huh).

For Pneuma (the light one) this is easy to understand: after all we know that combined, the seven elements make the Light element, but that is just because the seven elements are actually the spectrum of the Light element broken down, and it is said that the Dragons lived in a realm made of Light. So Pneuma (which means something about life and stuff) is Light, and it is the original substance from which the seven elements derive. 

One thing we know about Pneuma and Ousia is that they are opposites, they are both energy sources, and when interacting they annihilate each other, but also become more stable than when on their own.

Allegedly, this is probably also what Khaenri'ahn machines were powered on (because when the Ruin Serpent charges up he does that AoE attack where he shoot these yellow and purple blocks, which reminds me of Pneuma and Ousia; added to the fact that we know the Research Institute of Fontaine has been studying Dhari machines, this is probably some kind of confirmation).

Ousia literally means something about substance and matter (so on one hand you've got the "divine mind generating life" on the other you've got the matter, which remind me of the whole Descartes's res cogitans and res extensa, but whatever, another thing to look up again i guess).

If we're working on the whole "opposite to Pneuma" thing (so opposite to Light and elemental energy), then all that comes to mind is the Abyss (also referred to as the Void Realm).

This would tie back to Khaenri'ah and the fact that everything that everything that the Abyss touches gets the Mussolini treatment (this is a joke that literally only italians understand, sorry. Basically: it gets hanged upside down. down with the fascism boys)(i need to stop, sorry, i'm just in a silly goofy mood).

So divine things come from the Pneuma archè, that of Light: the Dragons, after them is the Primordial One, Celestia (Paimon??? The Travelers??? you know, the whole battle pass cutscene is hella sus).

The Abyss is a completely different archè: it exists outside of Teyvat and therefore has different laws (time is different there, we know from Childe's backstory), has taken on many different forms (oozing filth in the chasm, forbidden knowledge, etc) because its purest one is incompatible with the other realms.

(Do the Celestial Nails, placed in areas of high abyssal energy, contain enough divine power to generate an annihilation reaction, leading to funky but stable ley line disorders? Ice from Dragonspine doesn't melt, but doesn't spread either. Same for Tsurumi Island, the Eternal Oasis, and the Chasm)

Logically, there can only be one "original substance from which everything is generated", and the Abyss's presence on Teyvat is unnatural (the Abyss is, after all, a completely different world, it was Nibelung who sought out its power and opened the connection), so conflict is inevitable and again with the greek philosophy (still Heraclitus i believe, but i could be wrong): it is the conflict between opposites that generates things (such as energy). 

(The first human civilization in Teyvat, the one that saw the conflict between the Primordial One and the Second Who Came, is based on ancient Greece. DO WE THINK IT'S A COINCIDENCE???)

Abyssal and elemental energy being opposites also explains why elemental creatures are so vulnerable against abyssal energy, why gods defeated in the Archon War escaped to die in the "dark sea" outside of Teyvat, and the annihilation that leads to stabilization probably explains why some abyssal creatures can wield elemental energy (Abyssal creatures that we know where humans at first).

If the waters in Fontaine got contaminated when the Cataclysm happened (and previous Hydro Archon died), then oceanids, elemental creatures, would suffer quite a lot and escape from Fontaine and MAYBE even get a little bit corrupted as well. 

After all, the oceanid lady in the bottle event was extremely chill and lovely, while Rhodeia is as pleasant as hugging a cactus: is it just different personality or something similar to what happened with Apep (when she became a lot more angry after absorbing Forbidden Knowledge)? Doesn't Rhodeia also mention something about the waters in Qingce once being polluted as well (you know, right where the Chi was sealed? The Chi we know has something to do with abyssal energy from Baizhu's story quest)? 

Just throwing these out there, it's very cool to realize how connected the Genshin world really is.

Going back to the Oratrice, a divine mechanism, who, maybe, sensed the Abyss in Childe and either

had a funky reaction 

somehow knew the influence of the Abyss on Primordial Sea water (which after the world quests I can imagine how it could have happened), saw Childe's abyss-iness (abyssussy??? abussy??? amogus???) and went "Ah! Gotcha bitch" 

the Jakob Ingold thing (because Childe is basically a herald at this point, mf can switch forms like my boy Enjou did back in Enkanomiya, god I miss him). 

What would the abyss order have to gain by flooding Fontaine? Yeah, play the world quests. My boy Elynas is taking a nap bro (he chill tho so it's fine)

All of you just froze, staring at each other. You lower your feet, still floating in a midair.

You heard that right! Hu Tao is ACTUALLY a Fatui Harbinger. You may say: This isn't true! Well, it is. And I will be showing cold hard proof!

Here are 6 PIECES OF EVIDENCE as to why HU TAO WORKS FOR THE FATUI!!!

1: She donates dead bodies to Il Dottore

Why else would she run a huge business around funerals? Can we really trust her with dead people? We don't even know what she's doing with them! We don't even know what's inside the Wangsheng funeral parlor!

2: She is Columbina's sister

Hu Tao and Columbina have a LOT in common. They both have black hair and other red things on them. Columbina sings, and Hu Tao raps. Coincidence? I think NOT!

3: She is hunting down Qiqi to help the Fatui

Why is she hunting down Qiqi? Because Qiqi works for BAIZHU. And we all know that Baizhu and Dottore are ENEMIES to LOVERS. And right now they're enemies!

4: She wears all black like Pantalone

Both Pantalone and Hu Tao are from LIYUE. They are also both Fatui Harbingers. Could it be that Pantalone dragged Hu Tao into the Fatui so that they could both earn money? They must be working together!

5: Butterflies

We all know that Hu Tao has a lot of butterflies in her design. When we look at that Fatui video on youtube, you know with spoiler alert Signora's funeral, there is ACTUALLY a moth! A moth and a butterfly is basically the same thing soooooo!

6: Where else would they get signora's coffin?

These are all reasons why we CANNOT trust HU TAO. She is secretly EVIL and is planning on HURTING THE TRAVELER.

! major spoilers for all of natlan's archon quests up to 5.3!

i'll put most of it under a read more. melatonin is slowly siphoning most of my braincells so, take all this with a chunk of salt but personally...

natlan was a pretty huge miss, on the hit or a miss spectrum. like yeah i'm pretty partial to sumeru because my blorbos live there and while i do appreciate that at the very least natlan isn't inazuma, by god, i haven't been more pissed by a live service game company false advertising their game's story until this moment

natlan was supposed to be the nation of war (or, at least conflict, since they refused to specify the concept itself beyond "a people brought together by conflict"). our preconceptions coming in was well, the usual conflict you'd expect from a nation divided into differing tribes. interpersonal conflict, tribal conflict. i'm not disappointed by the choice to make the actual definition of natlan being a nation of conflict one ravaged by war with the abyss instead of being at war with each other. immediately it dispells any eurocentric misconceptions about the place, despite the already hefty amount piled onto it.

so the archon, right.

mavuika is a human-turned archon. she's been time displaced for about 500 years to serve as the battery that is keeping the lights on in the night kingdom and making it so everyone in natlan doesn't go mad with the lack of [gestures vaguely at the destroyed ley lines]. this was made possible by a wager set between xbalanque and ronova some centuries before the cataclysm and is, frankly, not a choice mavuika makes freely (in times of war, when the choice is between dying nobly at the clutches of the abyss after its ravaged your nation and living in misery as your loved ones die so strangers in the future can maintain stability, as a patriot, there is no other choice than to live on for the future).

and this rings true for a lot of the natlan archon quest. it's probably the most consistent they've been with themes of patriotism without floundering around with the definition of patriotism itself. in natlan, every hero you meet is, quite frankly, ready to fucking die for natlan.

mavuika is juxtaposed with our harbinger of the nation, il capitano-- a knight who lives on unwillingly for the sins of a few, watching nations one by one forget the legacy of his buried kingdom and its men. in fact, instead of sharing anything abt his nation in an act of sentimentality, this man abandons even his creed to an actual god (which. as a khaenriahn, is pretty notable) to save a nation nearly facing the same fate as his.

il capitano, for about 2 acts of the archon quest, tells us that living on as a human who can't die is a horrible existence. we've been shown previously the effects of the long-lived on those who cannot bear it: erosion, eventual annhilation of the self, yadda yadda. it's not pretty. sometimes you might even turn monster if you have enough abyss juice in you.

so, what does that tell us? that our pyro archon is probably the same? that secretly madam president of natlan is actually in deep deep suffering after centuries of being natlan's battery?

nope! in fact, we can even replace the battery! here's il capitano becoming the battery as a giant fuck you to ronova (and me, for that matter), where he sits eternally on his throne to give his fellow doomed countrymen a respite. may you honor his euthanasia.

on the outskirts of the in-game storytelling, mavuika has received 2 death flag promotional videos espousing her longing for the past and misery as she lives on without real connection. sure shes not the ONLY person in natlan who's like this [gestures vaguely at citlali] but just know! she truly hasn't been anyone else other than madam president for the last 500 years! because a woman can't be a person outside her job if she's not a mother or a sister! even though the pilgrimage used to be annual! for the past 500 years! didn't her friend atea just die?

and where's the conflict? gone! no more abyss. now we're a nation of... sportsmanship! let's go with that. ptsd over 500 years of war with the abyss, loss of loved ones, and [reads notes] abyssal corrosion syndrome? i don't know them! (psychiatrists hate this country). a woman whose sole responsibility for the last 500 years was to be the nation's battery and calm and composed leader, who was prepared to literally kill herself just to keep the lights on for about 200 more years, if possible, is just somehow magically able to adjust to peaceful life! no no, don't look at the conqueror of demons, allegory for war veterans, we don't need you to do that. look, she even has a cool fucking bike!!

Spoilers for 4.6 Genshin Impact: Kinda, mostly pointing some things out that my brain says is interesting enough to point out.

No, I haven't unlocked her full story or voice lines, and I would rather earn them myself to look into them, so if answers are there, then tell me how you level up her friendship quickly. I'm currently stuck at level 3.

Can we talk about how in the second part of the Arlecchino Boss fight, at least in her story quest, her pyro vision turns into a pyro delusion?

Other than Scaramouche, to my knowledge, the other Harbingers have/had (ripperoni Signora) delusions that aren't the same as their visions or abilities.

Also, if she forbids the children of the House to have delusions, why does she have one unless she was forced to accept it?

I honestly have zero theories, just questions and observations.

coming here to talk about arlecchino, my queen.

may contain spoilers or leaks or something but i have thoughts.

my first thoughts are about her animation. I KNOW IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE THE OG TIMELINE because of scaramouche being there. but i saw a theory on twitter the other day that had me thinking about potential theories, and i thought they'd be fun to discuss. namely, if this was her remembering the past and scaramouche is there, then she potentially remembers who he is. i like this theory, i may adapt this to my own portrayal. and perhaps for her own reasons, i can see her keeping this shit to herself for her own reasons. which means she can and would just pretend like she has no idea who he is overall. it makes it feel more fun.

AND HER VOICELINES.

saint showed me the video last night and specifically pointed out the one about dottore. and BOY did i get excited. because that's exactly EXACTLY what i thought would be the case! she works with him and basically trades children that give her zero potential to him for experimentation. i HAD A FEELING that was the case. she is the kind of person that prides herself on her own work, and the perfectionism of it, and she loves that she can whip these orphans into shape and have them be loyal as fuck toward her and the fatui. she's also the kind of person shady enough to be like "here dottore, this one won't listen. perhaps you can whip them into shape."

arlecchino isn't a good guy, no. she has her own agenda, obviously, but her voice line about childe PROVES she has a heart. she DOES care about people in her own way, she doesn't see everyone as disposable. people in this fandom are way too fucking quick to put someone in a black and white box and refuse to see nuance and anything in between and it's just tiresome at this point.

arlecchino is not a soft person, she definitely does morally bankrupt things without thinking twice over it. but she's not completely heartless either. she has a beating heart still and she does know how to use it. it's not a complete act either. we know she cares about her children. at least, about freminet, lynette and lyney. and we know she does care somewhat about childe. i knew she cared about him when she was the one who initially went to investigate his disappearance in fontaine.

she is a complex person and i am LIVING for it. i love this woman and i am so excited for her release. i have saved up for months and burnt myself out in the process, but WORTH IT cause she's literally right around the corner and HHHHHH.

a jumbled collection of random thoughts i have about the archon quest - spoilers below

mavuika is kind of boring... like i get what they were going for but i don't think they pulled it off which makes me sad bc she is a unique kind of character and i think she had a lot of potential. they want her to be a strong unflinching leader and also super tragic and the balance is just off and it leaves me with no connection to her

HOWEVER. her VA ate. especially in the scenes with Hine, she really pulled through as much as she could, i just don't think the writing did her justice most of the time.

honestly all the VAs in natlan are doing serious heavy lifting. with all the mediocre and/or messy designs, the voice acting often does the most to make me love a character. mualani could've been a cutout of an archetype we've seen time and time again, but the VA brings her to life with so much personality. i've really loved xilonen's VA since she first dropped, they have a unique style, they really make her sound conversational, not just like a character in a video game, but a voice of someone who's thinking as they speak (reminds me of welt from HSR actually lol. both very good performances imo). ororon is a trainwreck of a character, but his voice gives me cuteness aggression. of course he's a grandson, he's adorable. chasca is frustrating to look at, but her VA really pulls through in emotional scenes, literally the perfect voice you could've found for chasca. all the VAs are killing it, even if i haven't mentioned them here.

i think the best part of the quest was actually the domain before the big fight. getting to see everyone from all the tribes, ESPECIALLY NPCS and hearing what they had to say, and including characters from the tribal chronicles and world quests was so satisfying. probably the closest genshin has gotten to making it feel like a real world. i don't know how it worked if you hadn't done those quests but as someone who has, it was so great. everything really came together in a way the devs have tried to do for a long time and just now succeeded.

Speaking of NPCs.. vichama... sad gay man of all time. just one of many ways they brought threads back and made the world feel whole. (shout out to bona too. loved seeing her.)

why can they never get the pacing right. why was the intro w the party and and everything SO LONG.. i got bored and almost quit to come back another day. when will they learn to condense.

although everyone talking about their dreams of dead loved ones and kinich being randomly absent bc he would've had to talk about his dead abusive drunk father is so funny to me. definitely would've brought the mood down

i was also so shocked that their ancient name didn't have to do with their role as a descender. i thought it'd be 'witness' or 'sword' or 'will' or something. hope was a shock.

i wish they'd done a bit more explaining on what we were fighting, why we were hearing former pyro archons ect. left it a little blank? idk i feel like something had to have been removed bc we fight it and then just like don't acknowledge what happened. it's weird.

also did anyone read the description for the ancient name? because wtf??

i think a lot of people will agree with me when i say that i would've enjoyed capitano a lot more if he wasn't 1st of the Fatui Harbingers. they really did so much telling, not showing when it came to his strength and as a harbinger it was really disappointing. he's supposed to rival a god but he just sits in the corner plotting and whining about honor the whole time. i feel like his plot got really pushed to the side.

his story itself i'm still unsure about. it was definitely predictable, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. i love that his frozen corpse is just sitting on the throne and u can go see him. that's so sick. anyway i think i need more time with it. if he was a different character i think i would've been satisfied but he was too built up and i was expecting something more exciting.

ronova is really sexy. like. i am attracted to that eldritch being shade. why is she shaped like a vagina.. anyway. i might be insane.

anyway this is like.. a 6/10 archon quest for me. definitely doesn't stand up next to sumeru and fontaine imo but they had to lose steam somewhere, right? i think this might end up overshadowed by being sandwiched between fontaine and snezhnaya, and i think i'm okay with that. i still had fun.

thoughts after messaging 2b and choko for much of the day, either paraphrasing ideas or re-writing them here. insane little lady, spooky as can be.

- she has obsessive tendencies; despite all the odd in fighting between harbingers, columbina views each of them as her “family.” she sang rosalyne off to the next life as her precious sister... like just out here eye zooming at all these terrible harbingers. they are Hers.

- death to her is not a “””bad””” thing. it’s merely a new phase of existence, and she was wishing rosalyne well. sending her off softly, and that despite not being able to see her anymore, columbina is happy for wherever she may flutter off. she will hold her gently in her heart forevermore.

- columbina is almost always smiling softly, with a dazed, almost serene appearance... though, her eyes have no light in them whatsoever. 2b offered the idea of having them be fully black and bug-like, and i’m still debating!! tbh, it would be SUPER cool to have them like that beneath her cross-hatched mask

- to prove her “ownership,” that someone is dear to her and Hers, she will give them a variety of endearing nicknames. there is always one that is solely used for that person, and then others that are just Generally Utilized. some have multiple personalized nicknames, it depends on her fondness for them or just what pops into her head (Solnyshko, or little sun, is one of Tartaglia’s names).

- columbina is especially fond of arlecchino and visits her and the orphanages very often

- she likes to... sew things. creatures that have appeared in her dreams. fluffy, soft toys that have rows upon rows of teeth and mouths in odd places. Eyes on the inside. teeth and claws are always razor sharp. the house of hearth is a spy training camp, so others may view it as a way to keep them on their toes, but columbina truly finds her creations to be adorable and worthy of a child’s affections. she means her gifts Very Genuinely

- she is no hypocrite, and so if another lays claim to someone or something, she will Respect this implicitly. she is no thief. that said, she will still be kind to things that are not Hers

- columbina speaks quietly, her voice almost in song regularly. her words can be cryptic or poetic, just odd thoughts and feelings. she is polite enough.

- on the other hand harbinger arguments are just given a lil tut. family bickers all the time. such is life. hums off and leaves them to it

- she is fondest of draping herself against others. dramatically and softly becomes a shroud of creepy eerie harbinger

- animals are either deathly afraid of her and will scramble away, or they are relaxed bc of the serene disposition she exudes. if they run away and she was trying to dote, she will viciously kill them. and then sew them back together like taxidermy, with fabric and parts from other creatures (perhaps hilichurls, really anything around), to keep them Forever. they were always meant to be Hers.

- this goes into how an additional method of proving her ownership is to patch things up. animals, objects, people. if she sews them up, they are hers. in general, my columbina takes a heavy dose of inspiration from Ray of Angels of Death

- cryo catalyst user; she’s similar in nature to how heizou does punches and kicks, but her cryo energy manifests as elongated claws. her delusion is a hydro one, and tends to manifest as eldritch tendrils.

- columbina never knew love prior to being a harbinger, and her desire to Own People and Things is a sort of mechanism by which she can showcase her love. she is filled to the brim with love. but she has never been wanted, until the tsaritsa accepted her into the fold. she is eternally loyal, and considers herself to be owned by both the tsaritsa and arlecchino. which haha could become an issue if arlecchino is less than loyal

- i’m assuming columbina is her main harbinger title and damselette is similar in nature to how rosalyne was “the fair lady” and ajax/aias’ sub title is “childe.” she mainly goes by columbina as that is the name the tsaritsa bestowed upon her. otherwise, she does not offer any given names. you may nickname her, and she will take that as a sign of love.
